Sandy Close, at the New American Media office, now closed, Friday Dec. 1, 2017 in San Francisco, CA.

“For more than 45 years, Sandy Close brought the unlikeliest of voices into journalism, mentoring and publishing refugees from Vietnam and Afghanistan, incarcerated youth offenders, and young men who hustled drugs on the streets but knew their communities intimately. Now after more than 45 years, Pacific News Service and New American Media, the organizations she ran, are closing up shop, ending a media institution whose influence will continue to be felt through the scores of talented alumni working in journalism today.”
