4/8/14 3:21:35 PM -- Houston, TX -- Anita Bertrand, a nurse anesthesiologist who became addicted to Fentanyl after being given the drug to recover from a hysterectomy. A senior and respected staffer with no prior history of drug or alcohol abuse, Bertrand went on an eight-month spiral of addiction. She began by stealing drugs from her hospital, and ultimately reached the point where she installed an IV port in her ankle so she could give herself a quick fix on the job. By the end, she was injecting herself with the remains of medication in thrown-out syringes that were used on patients. She was caught after a doctor found her passed out in her car in the hospital parking lot, empty syringe at her side. She now is recovered, back to practice, and counseling other addicted health care workers.
This story reveals that tens of thousands of doctors, nurses and other health care practitioners are abusing or addicted to drugs, working while impaired, and putting both their patients and themselves at grave risk.
